In the competitive and ever-evolving fire industry, Fire Security Services is proud to be leading the way in nurturing fresh talent and providing them with growth opportunities. Here at FSS we have developed a trainee program that not only brings new individuals into the industry but also benefits the careers of experienced staff who have become mentors.
Sheldon, an Alarm Field Supervisor at FSS Rotorua shared his insights on what makes working at FSS so exceptional. "Our culture and team. We have an awesome culture in the Rotorua branch where everyone is willing to put their hand up when help is needed," he explained. "We all work together to ensure the best outcomes for all our mahi." FSS's culture of collaboration and support creates an environment where all our staff can be happy to come to work each day.
For Sheldon, the experience of being a mentor in the trainee programme was a new and rewarding one. "We can spend quality time with our trainee ensuring they are getting the correct and best training". The support from technicians across various departments who willingly lend their expertise adds value to the training process. Sheldon praised his trainee, Kody, for catching on quickly, making the training process smoother. This mentorship role has not only impacted Kody's growth but also contributed to Sheldon's own professional development.
Reflecting on his personal growth, Sheldon revealed, "When I first came into the industry, my training wasn’t great. Being Kody's mentor enabled me to provide him with the training I wished I had when I first joined the fire trade." This program empowers mentors like Sheldon to share their knowledge and skills to the newcomers, ensuring a strong and capable workforce in the fire industry.
Kody, an enthusiastic trainee who joined FSS in January, shared his experiences thus far. "The training program is great. It allows me to be exposed to multiple fields and gain general knowledge about various aspects of the industry," he said. Kody is enjoying alarm work and service, seeing everything come together and overcoming challenges during fault finding is satisfying.
Kody's positive experiences extend beyond the training itself. "FSS has easily already been one of the better companies I've worked for. The Rotorua branch has been absolutely awesome, with such a welcoming team that makes coming to work a lot easier and more enjoyable."
Highlighting his mentor, Kody described Sheldon as a "cool dude" who goes beyond work-related stuff and offers invaluable guidance.
As Kody's journey continues, Sheldon concludes, "Kody has a big future in this industry from what we have seen already, and I am blessed to have been a part of his journey thus far." The FSS trainee program's success is evident, not only in the growth of trainees like Kody but also in the career development of mentors like Sheldon, who find fulfilment in shaping the industry's future professionals.
If you're considering a career in the fire industry, Kody has some advice: "Just full send it, don't be afraid to jump into a new field. Ask questions, don't be afraid to ask even if you think they're stupid questions." The FSS trainee program provides the ideal platform to explore and excel in the fire industry, enabling individuals to realise their potential and make a significant impact.
